Enryū-ji Temple was founded in the 5th year of the Genna era (1619) by Asano Nagaakira, the first lord of the Hiroshima domain. He granted approximately 1,600 tsubo (about 5,300 square meters) of land in Mikawacho, Naka Ward, where the temple is located today, and invited Jizen'in Nichion, the 17th head priest of Kokuzen-ji, to serve as the founding priest.
The first chief priest, Nichion, became a monk at a young age and studied at the Iidaka Danrin school, where he honed his skills. He was an exceptional monk and also a master of prayer.
When the temple was founded, it was constructed at its current location on the southern edge of Hiroshima Castle. This location not only served as a place for the teachings of the Lotus Sutra within the Hiroshima domain but also played a role as a defensive stronghold for the southern part of the territory.
It is said that there were six halls in addition to the main hall, and various gods, including Mitsunaga Daimyoujin, were enshrined there. However, due to multiple fires and the impact of warfare, only the Touka hall, dedicated to Touka Daimyoujin, the leader of the protective deities, remains today.
For nearly 400 years since its founding, Enryū-ji Temple has been deeply rooted in the community of Hiroshima. Through various events, including the annual "Touka-san Grand Festival" held in June, it continues to gather the faith of the people.
